Physician Consultations
These are available with our board certified sleep specialists to discuss your current sleep patterns and any difficulty you may be having with attaining or maintaining sleep.
Overnight Sleep Study
Sleep studies are painless and designed to encourage easy, normal sleep. When you arrive for your sleep study, a Whitney Sleep technologist will carefully prepare you for the study and attach sensors to measure your breathing rate, oxygen levels, heart rhythm, brain waves, and the movements of your eyes, chin and legs while you sleep. The volume of your snoring will also be measured.
Before going to sleep you will be introduced to a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) mask and machine. Halfway through the night, should the study reveal that you have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, our technologist will wake you to implement CPAP and determine the best pressure needed to maintain an open airway while sleeping. Overnight sleep tests are completed by 6:00 to 7:00 am.
At your follow-up office visit, a Whitney Sleep board certified sleep specialist will review your sleep study results and determine a treatment plan for you. When a CPAP is prescribed, one of our clinicians will assist you in finding the best equipment for your needs. Sleep supplies including CPAP and bi-level CPAP machines, nasal pillows, nasal and full face masks, and other accessories are available at Whitney Sleep. Our goal is to help you start sleeping better right away.
Home Sleep Testing
In the event that a home sleep test is desired, you will be provided with a Type III home sleep testing device. This is an at home, do-it-yourself kit with instructions provided. Following 1-2 nights of use you will return the device, which will then be scored and interpreted by a Whitney Sleep physician and discussed at your follow-up office visit. This device is exclusively used for the evaluation of possible obstructive sleep apnea.
Overnight Oximetry Test
A test to monitor and record the level of oxygen in your blood as you sleep through the night at home. With this test, an oxygen sensor is clipped to your finger and connected to a machine called an oximeter.
Multi Sleep Latency Test
This tests for excessive daytime sleepiness by measuring how quickly you fall asleep in a quiet environment during the day. Also known as a daytime nap study, the MSLT is the standard tool used to diagnose narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia.
Maintenance of Wakefulness Test
A daytime sleep study that measures your ability to stay awake and alert during the day. The MWT can also tell your doctor how well your treatment is working. This is a test often used for people with commercial drivers licenses.
Actiwatch Test
A non-invasive technique used to assess cycles of activity and rest over several days to several weeks. Your doctor may ask you to wear an actigraph for a period of time to get an objective measurement of your sleep schedule.
